In April 1972 John Myers bought a 5 x 4 inch Gandolfi plate camera and started taking photographs. Myers’ work covers the people and places near his home, in Stourbridge, England, with later work turning his lens on the changing face of Black Country Industry.
John Myers’ last photograph was taken in the mid 1980s, when he turned his attention back to painting and sculpture.
The Guide includes work from previous books published by RRB Photobooks (The Portraits, Looking At The Overlooked, and The End of Industry) plus 5 previously unpublished images.

By The Way
The Wild Kindness is by David Berman, and originally performed by the Silver Jews. Track released February 19, 2021 on Drag City. Funny tribute to the great musician and poet Berman!
Myers demonstrates his remarkable self-awareness with a wry wit in describing his pictures, like the best of teachers he is neither dry nor academic but draws the reader into conversation.
The Guide is very much a photobook, its large format gives Myers’ images the size and space they deserve. Each story stands on its own page among its companion images, allowing the text to be dipped into at will as the eye takes in the rich visuals.
In this film John Myers talks about his exhibition at Ikon Gallery (30 November 2011- 5 February 2012). Link.
