Renato Rampolla is a street photographer based in Tampa, Florida. His book, Dignity No Matter What: The Light Within is a series of portraits of homeless people along with their stories. With the proceeds going to charity, it has been reprinted several times thereby raising funds for a local non-profit that works with the homeless.
Over 550,000 (pre-covid) of our fellow human beings are fighting to survive in a situation that most of us can barely imagine. That’s 550,000 in the United States alone, holding on to the last shreds of their dignity as they desperately try not to lose themselves in their existing circumstances.
These people aren’t just numbers, they are real people who love and want to receive love, with hopes, memories, and dreams. Getting to know them and hearing their stories reminds me of just how tenuous life can be. Sharing their portraits with the world is my way to communicate what I feel. Perhaps even give them a voice.
